It has recently come to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's (HKSAR) public's attention that the air pollution in the HKSAR is more than 2 times above the World Health Organisation's (WHO) air pollution standard.

This has already effected the public in a huge variety of ways. On average every second in Hong Kong, THREE people have disease attacks or die of air pollution. But who does air pollution have the most impact on? Children. Children who hold the very future of this country in their hands. Children who die simply because their home is the largest threat to them.

Most people think that the air pollution is carried over by winds from China. But this is false. Particulates readings show that that Hong Kong produces most of it's own pollution.

Moreover, malls and residential buildings (especially lobbies) waste air conditioning by putting their thermostat on extreme temperatures. Most people find it cold and wear a jacket while inside malls! If their thermostat went down 5 points, they could save about 1 million HKD every year.

We do understand that the government is trying their best to reduce air pollution as Hong Kong is the most polluted region in asia, but it is clearly not working. This is not working because there are not current penalties or laws that prevent the industry from producing too much pollution. Plus, the Air Pollution Index standard is incredibly outdated and does not even come near to measuring the air pollution in the air.

We, the undersigned, urge the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to adopt these measures:

1. Create tighter air quality standards that replace the present ones, which are more than 20 years old.

2. Urgent clean-up of roadside emissions. Especially replacing the current, old, polluting vehicles with the new less pollutant, EURO 3 vehicles

3. Creating and enforcing a law that states a penalty for vehicles or industries that produce a large amount of pollution.

4. Regulating air conditioning temperature in malls.
