On Feb. 2, 2021, Rep. Joe Courtney (D-CT-2) introduced the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act (H.R.1195). Violence in health care and social service workers is currently at an extremely high rate. Healthcare workers are 20% more likely than other workers to experience violence by other employees (The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing 2022). Seventy five percent of the nearly 25,000 workplace assaults reported annually occurred in healthcare and social services settings (Occupational Safety and Health Administration [OSHA], 2016).
This bill requires the Department of Labor to address workplace violence in health care, social service, and other sectors that conduct similar activities as health care and social services. This will require employers to take actions to protect workers and other personnel from workplace violence. Violent incidents in health care and social service professions is a constant possibility. Therefore having the right policies, protocols, and trainings can greatly minimize the chances of workplace violence.
On April, 16, 2021 the House of Representatives passed the bill and since April 19, 2021 it has been in the Senate.
