Cuts to bring our school budget in line should not effect class size.
Ample research by the National Council of Teachers of English, Superkids, the US Department of Education, and the results of Project STAR (Student/Teacher Ratio) and its follow up HEROS (Health and Education Research Operative Services) has shown that smaller classes are one of the most effective ways to increase learning in the classroom.
The research clearly shows that student in small classes are more likely to pursue college, have higher graduation rates and achieve at higher levels.
We, the undersigned parents, teachers and other concerned members of the community, urge you not to solve the school budget crisis by eliminating a fifth grade teacher.
The preservation of teachers whose daily face to face work in the classroom with our students is the crux of student success and achievement must be the school committee's number one priority.
We ask you to look for ways to solve the budget crisis that do not eliminate a teacher and increase our school's classroom sizes.
