San Juan County and Eastsound Planning Review Committee (EPRC) are considering constructing wide, urban, concrete sidewalks on Haven Road in Eastsound on Orcas Island. This would substantially reduce the available parking, especially around the Odd Fellows Hall.
The County Engineer’s cross-sectional drawing makes NO PROVISION for parking on either side of Haven Road in front of the Hall. This would have a significant negative impact on our public events, classes, and the local economy.
In the past 15 years, the Odd Fellows Hall has hosted 386 weddings, which collectively have brought in about $32 million in beneficial side-effect revenue to the local economy. That works out to be over $2 million per year.
Weddings at the hall need parking. The typical wedding has 110 to 150 guests attending for which ample parking is essential. The wedding revenue received by the Odd Fellows helps fund the various capital projects that keep the hall in good working order. It also helps subsidize local renter rates - keeping them affordable for all. The Hall helps teachers make a living and inspires students to learn.
We encourage you to attend the EPRC meeting at the Eastsound Fire Hall on Thursday, May 3rd @ 3:00 PM
We will also present this petition to the County Council at the Eastsound Fire Hall on Tuesday, May 8th @ 10:00 AM
We encourage you to attend both meetings...Let’s keep Haven Road as it is.
Thank you for your support!
The Odd Fellows - serving our community since 1891...
The County and Eastsound Planning Review Committee (EPRC) are considering constructing a wide, urban, concrete sidewalk on Haven Road. This would substantially reduce the available parking, especially around the Odd Fellows Hall.
We, the undersigned, frequent Haven Road when we attend classes, fundraisers, birthdays, weddings, and so much more at The Odd Fellows Hall, a community treasure since 1891. The Hall helps teachers make a living, and students to learn, with classes including fitness, Zumba, karate, dance, yoga, Tai Chi, and much more - over 30 classes per week. Parking is essential to support this thriving community center.
We, the undersigned, urge the EPRC to withdraw their recommendation for the sidewalk on Haven Road, and we encourage the County Council to preserve Haven Road on-street parking, and support the most active community center in the County!
