Birkbeck College must put into practice what it promises...

Prayer facilities for Muslim students, staff and workers now!

To: The Governors of Birkbeck College

A Muslim student recently approached the college to find out where the College’s prayer room was – he was told that the college doesn’t have one. This goes against Birkbeck’s proud progressive history. What was to become Birkbeck College was launched in a pub on the Strand on 2nd December 1823, dedicated to the education of working people, regardless of religious affiliation. Our College was one of the first colleges to admit women as students in this country.

Today Birkbeck is one of the most diverse multicultural and multiracial colleges in the country, and in our city:

“The College values its institutional culture which embraces diversity for all its members (students and staff) and its visitors which is in line with the College’s founding beliefs and ethos of openness and access for all, and over the years it has successfully reflected the rich diversity of London amongst its staff and student population.”
[Birkbeck College Single Equality Strategy 2009 – 2012 Paragraph 1.2]

Our college must be, in deeds as well as words, a place of equality, a place of dignity and respect for all, a place that caters for and is accessible for all, a place that is an example to our city and nation, a place full of hope.

We therefore demand that the College immediately makes suitable facilities available in the College to enable Muslim students and staff to comply with their requirement to pray five times a day.

The Support prayer facilities for Muslim students, staff and workers at Birkbeck petition to Governors of Birkbeck was written by Movement for Justice and is in the category Civil Rights at GoPetition.
