The proposal by the Sydney Campus Apartments to shoot sulphur crested cockatoos in order to prevent further damage to their building is unethical, unsafe and doomed to failure.

Two of these beautiful, intelligent, long lived birds have already been shot under licence from the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) in the name of protecting building facades, yet this has not solved the problem. In only a matter of months another bird has moved into the area and started damaging the building, prompting a new request for a culling licence.

If this bird is shot, what’s to stop more coming along? Will these be shot too? When will it end?

We, the undersigned, call on the NPWS and Environment Minister Frank Sartor to not authorise any more culling of cockatoos to protect buildings at Broadway and that engineering solutions instead be used to prevent bird damage.
