We aren’t opposed to new bus stops, they are needed and in the public interest. Yet, some well-intended decisions deliver unexpected and even dangerous results. The bus stop at 3165-3175 Mission Street is one of those, and we petition for its location be reconsidered.
We’ll prevent avoidable community tragedy.
Many factors support the wisdom of rethinking the location of this bus stop, but ultimately all involve public safety and the best interests of the community. Here is a quick summary.
The adverse impact on the neighborhood only begins with livability. As situated, the bus stop straddles the garages of two densely-populated residential buildings. Buses and riders are thrust into the in-and-out traffic flow, blocking vehicles from entering or exiting. It’s a recipe for bus, car and pedestrian collisions, all avoidable accidents waiting to happen.
It gets worse. The bus stop has no shelter, so riders take cover in the garages or overhangs, resulting in increased noise, congestion, loitering and property damage. Property crimes include a rash of break-ins, no less than one per week, violated mailboxes, cars and more.
There is a simple, logical, win-win solution.
We ask MTA to seek public input to relocate the bus stop in closer proximity to commercial enterprises that will benefit from the convenience for their customers. We also seek shelter for the safety of MTA customers, who no longer will be forced to find it on private property.
