Rap music originated as a political battleground for African-Americans to express their views on prevalent issues within America. Since its beginning in the early 1970s, rap music has been on a downward spiral towards the discussion of inappropriate themes such as misogyny, violence, and drug abuse. Rap record labels are perpetuating these themes by encouraging their signees to rap about these issues because they think it's "what sells". Instead of an expressive outlet for the oppressed African-American culture, rap music has generally become about rich men getting attractive women without any effort and binge-drinking/taking excessive drugs throughout the song. This is not what rap music started as and it aids in associating a negative connotation to rap music that makes parents concerned with the music shoved in the faces of their children. Because the target audience for rap music is young teens, there needs to be a drastic change in the social norms within rap music. By doing this, parents need to step in to protest the brainwashing of their children into believing that money will solve all problems and help young men gain easy access to women.

We, the undersigned call on large music streaming companies such as Apple, Spotify, and Soundcloud to give control back to the parents and legal guardians of innocent children who are listening to music that contains themes unsuitable for their age groups. We ask that parental controls be installed for all accounts containing minors under the age of 18 so that certain songs, artists, or genres can be restricted from said minors. Then, it is up to the adult's discretion on whether or not they allow music containing violent, misogynistic, and criminal themes to be heard by their children.
