This road borders residential areas and it became a very busy road in the last few years. There is no street lamps. Residents use this road to go to work, school, church and shopping centres. It is the only road residents can use to get either to the CBD or Kruger National Park.
At the Albatros road intersection is a small, but very busy shopping complex, close to the 4 way stop. Complaints by residents about speeding and vehicles failing to stop are regular. An additional concern is the new local sport of 325 BMW's spinning and racing starting inside the residential area and along Portia Shabangu street. At the Tarentaal street junction is no intersection control and residents struggle to enter Portia Shabangu without risk.
The same apply to the Shabalala residents. Vehicles trying to exit Kruger Park Lodge have to wait up to 15 minutes to enter because of speeding vehicles. This problem gets worse at night and after hours like on weekends.
“We, the undersigned, are concerned about the increased volume and speed of traffic running along Portia Shabangu road between the Traffic Circle and Phabeni Gate. We call on Mbombela City Council to investigate implementing traffic and pedestrian safety measures, especially where the road intersect with residential areas and tourism destinations.”
“We suggest either traffic lights, pedestrian crossings, high mast lamps or speed bumps, and that speed cameras be implimented to decrease the speed and to aid in forcing people to stop at the intersections to the residential areas and holiday destinations.” This is a matter of urgency, also because of the increased traffic that will incure with the FIFA world cup in June.
I believe that appropriate action should be taken to assess the extent of the problem and to resource appropriate traffic calming measures to prevent injury and/or the loss of life these roads.
I would also request that the Traffic Police become more proactive in monitoring traffic to effect prosecution of speeding drivers, and that they liaise with the local authority to consider an appropriate response to this issue.
