PETITION FOR THE CONGOLESE WOMEN'S CAMPAIGN AGAINST SEXUAL VIOLENCE IN THE DRC INTENDED FOR THE MEMBERS OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY -

Right now there's a war taking place in the heart of Africa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and more people have died there than in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Darfur combined. The most frequent targets of this hidden war are women.

It is, in fact, a war against women, and the weapon used to destroy them, their families and whole communities, is rape. It's the deadliest conflict since World War II. Within the last ten years, more than four million people have died and the numbers keep rising.

The United Nations was called in and today their mission is the largest peacekeeping operation in history. In some villages as many as 90 percent of the women have been raped.

TO THE HONOURABLE THE SPEAKER AND MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ASSEMBLED IN PARLIAMENT:

The petition of certain citizens of Australia draws to the attention of the house,

-Tens of thousands of civilians, mostly women and girls, have been sexually assaulted or tortured over the course of more than ten years of conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

- Every day, 40 women are raped in the Eastern Congo.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to,

-support a United Nations effort to assist the survivors of sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

-Contribute to the United Nations Population Fund's (UNFPA) project against sexual violence.
