Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a diagnostic term used to describe impacts on the brain and body of individuals prenatally exposed to alcohol. FASD is a lifelong disability. Individuals with FASD will experience some degree of challenges in their daily living, and need support with motor skills, physical health, learning, memory, attention, communication, emotional regulation, and social skills to reach their full potential. Each individual with FASD is unique and has areas of both strengths and challenges. (FASD ONE, 2021)
We, the parents, caregivers, guardians, professionals and community members petition the Peel District School board to create a Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) specific classroom.
At present, no such classroom exists and many students with FASD in The Region of Peel are not able to attend class for the duration of the school day due to a lack of accommodations and an environment that is not conducive to the FASD disability. FASD is a developmental disability that requires a specific environment that would allow children with FASD to learn and continue to develop socially.
An FASD specific classroom would provide students an environment, which is specific to their sensory and learning needs. This classroom is important, as FASD is a spectrum disability; some students are able to function in a mainstream classroom while others struggle and are often neglected. This classroom would function with an FASD lens which these students have been lacking in their education thus far.
The school system has the funds to provide such a classroom and there is no reason why the implementation of such a program has not yet been initiated. The infrastructure to provide a FASD specific classroom can be found through the existing intensive behavioural support classrooms.
We demand the Peel District School Board immediately create an FASD classroom to give these students with FASD equity in learning and socialization before the beginning of the school year September 2021.
