The state of Michigan passed a law in 2015 that specifically allows the usage of Golf Carts on certain low speed limit roads. (Michigan Vehicle Code section 257.657a) However, they required it to be controlled at the township level by ordinance, so we must pass one in order to take advantage of it. The benefits are numerous. Golf carts are QUIET and SLOW, two very important things when you're out biking/walking dogs/playing with children/etc. They provide quick and easy transportation to our aging population who don’t have the ability to walk or bike to their friend or family’s houses. They usually have a maximum speed of 15-20 MPH, are energy efficient, and are a safer alternative to other simple, legal forms of transportation such as mopeds and scooters. 25 Michigan communities have already adopted these ordinances and have not seen negative effects, including South Haven, Ludington, Grass Lake, and Milford.

We, the undersigned residents of Columbia Township, call on the Columbia Township board of trustees to debate and ultimately pass an ordinance allowing golf carts on our residential roads, in accordance with the Michigan Motor Vehicle Code section 257.657a.
