The Dream Act, which stands for Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors has been a landmark bill that was first introduced in 2001.

This bill act would allow for illegal immigrants to continue school without worry of being deported back to their native country, if and only if they keep attending school and be in good moral standing. Also, States can help illegal immigrants find different ways to make college tuition more affordable.

The Dream Act protects the immigrants from deportation and allows them the opportunity to be a permanent resident if they follow the conditions set by this Act. What our group found interesting was the ridiculous length is has taken Congress to act on such a pressing issue that involves individuals that are essentially Americans, but without the proper legal residence and documentation. This proposal has been introduced to Congress with support from both parties and we would like to figure out and further examine how we can make this bill a more bi-partisan piece of legislation, while fixing the primary concerns of those opposing the bill, such as the perpetuation of further illegal immigration, importing poverty and cheap labor, the use of illegal immigrants as a recruitment tool for the military, and the social and economic burdens on American society. The sources that we plan on exploring include academic journals from both a legal perspective and from sociologists. Statistical reports showing the potential economic impact this act would have on the American economy. Personal interviews from illegal immigrants who have shown they have aspirations to attend higher learning institutions and prove that they are individuals who deserve a chance to utilize the American education system. These problems are important because they are what is keeping this bill from passing Congress.

If we can address the problems mentioned above, this law would finally become a gateway for a generation of illegal immigrants that aspire to contribute to the American system through medicine, business, and other avenues that can only be achieved through an education. Considering this country is built on immigrants, our policy towards those that actually want to achieve and make something out of their lives should enable that ideology, not hinder it.

We, the undersigned, call on The United States Congress to ratify the Dream Act to provide an alternative to students of good standing the opportunity to attend institutions of higher learning and access to the American Dream.
