Georgetown University’s 2010-2020 proposed campus plan proposes no new student housing -- a priority issue for the community -- and therefore does nothing to mitigate the problems created by the current density of undergraduate and graduate students living in the neighborhoods.

Indeed by proposing to increase student enrollment by almost 3700 students* the Plan will exacerbate existing objectionable conditions and accelerate the already alarming conversion of single-family homes to group rental units.

Many of these houses are poorly maintained and can often house up to six individuals each, threatening the fragile balance needed to preserve our neighborhoods.

An increase in group rental housing will exacerbate already objectionable levels of noisy, rude, and unsafe alcohol-fueled behavior and will increase traffic and parking problems.

Other negative aspects of its plan include the proposed new loop road, the roof over Yates Sportscenter, and the alignment of 38th Street NW with GU’s main campus and hospital entrance.

We, the undersigned, strongly oppose GU’s campus plan. We look to Mayor Gray, Councilmember Jack Evans, the Office of Planning, and the Zoning Commission to vigorously oppose the plan and require the University to comply with the District zoning laws which allow universities to operate in residential neighborhoods only if located so that they are not likely to become objectionable to neighboring property because of noise, traffic, number of students, or other objectionable conditions.
