The intersection of NJ State road 439 (North Avenue) and Union County road 623 (North Broad Street) in Elizabeth, NJ is a busy automotive and pedestrian intersection with a currently insufficient traffic design to ensure pedestrian safety. This is a dangerous intersection for pedestrians. This intersection has three (3) NJ Transit bus stops, each corner has an apartment building with thousands of cumulative units, and it is walking distance to the North Elizabeth NJ Transit Railroad station. In addition, it is half of a block from a church, a synagogue, and a Catholic school, as well as walking distance from three (3) public schools. While this intersection is busy pedestrian intersection, there are currently no pedestrian cross signals, no automotive turning lanes, no pedestrian right-of-way traffic signals, no traffic cameras, poor visibility to oncoming and turning traffic, and faded crosswalk paint. Pedestrians, including parents with children, parents with carriages, and the elderly, endure daily close encounters with cars turning in both directions. As a resident of one of the corner apartment buildings mentioned, I witness cars nearly colliding with pedestrians multiple times per day. Please sign the petition below to show your support for state and local agencies to make signicant traffic safety renovations to the North Avenue and North Broad Street intersection.

I support local and state traffic agencies voting in favor of making significant renovations to the North Avenue (NJ-439) and North Broad Street (UC-623) intersection in Elizabeth, NJ in order to promote pedestrian and automotive safety. Suggested changes include but are not limited to:

1. Addition of pedestrian cross signals on both streets and in both directions;
2. Addition and designation of left-turn-only lanes on both streets and in both directions;
3. Addition of left-turn-only light signals on both streets and in both directions;
4. Reduction of street parking spaces for 100 ft. in all directions to provide adequate space for straight-and-right-turn-only lanes;
5. Addition of clear, large, and abundant signage for pedestrian and vehicular traffic;
6. Delayed green light to allow priority for crossing pedestrians.
