A model of a white Horse, 33 times life size, 164 feet high, to cost £10m to £12m, is planned for a site near Ebbsfleet in Kent. It would be a blot on Kent’s beautiful countryside.
The public cannot go up it. It is no monument. It serves no practical purpose. It has no spirit, no humour, no character, and there is nothing clever about it (although its construction might cause some head scratching). It carries no:- St. George, no Lady Godiva, no Jean d’Acre, and it is no Invicta*.
It pulls no cart, draws no plough, but simply stands, as any normal white horse might do anywhere in the country, in a field, or paddock. It is no better than a farm animal from a toy shop (and made in China).
It could be a dangerous distraction to passing drivers on the nearby A2/M2. Tourist will laugh at the very sight of it. It would not be easy to maintain, and costly to do so. That sort of money, if it ever becomes available, could be subdivided into lots to provide smaller projects for towns dotted around the county, projects that had the full backing of the local community.
It is not so much a work of art as a scale model.
