The Town of Chapel Hill Council members voted 8-1 to keep the issue of Bow Hunting of deer in Chapel Hill city limits open for discussion. On April 19th at 7 pm there will be a Deer Population Hearing.

This issue is being discussed even though a memo from the Chapel Hill Police, Public Works, and Parks & Recreation Departments stated that "We do not believe an urban hunt is a viable option for the town."
In fact, the possibility of a deer being impaled by a broadhead arrow and then dying instantaneously is extremely slight.

Numerous studies of bow hunting for deer have concluded that for every deer legally killed by bowhunters, at least one or more is struck by a broadhead arrow, wounded, and not recovered.

Moreover, domestic animals are in danger of being wounded or killed as are people.

We, the undersigned, oppose the consideration of “urban hunting” by the Town Council of Chapel Hill both because of our deep respect and compassion for the wildlife that so greatly enrich our community and because of the safety concerns we have about the increase of weapons of any kind being discharged within our town limits.

As Chapel Hill continues to grow and expand its borders into wildlife habitats, we must look for sustainable solutions that allow us to live alongside the wildlife instead of killing off more of their population in order to make room for more of ours.

We encourage the Town Council to consider only educational, awareness, and land management-based solutions at this time.
