No to a limestone mine under Lake Ontario

Whereas, St. Marys Cement has proposed to open a mine underneath Lake Ontario at Bowmanville and to extract up to 4 Million Tonnes of limestone each year for the next hundred years;

And whereas, there are currently no limestone mines underneath the Great Lakes, and St. Marys Cement does not have experience in developing an under-the-lake limestone mine;

And whereas, the mine would be located next to a nuclear power plant, under a prime sport fishing area, next to provincially significant wetlands, and next to a popular public beach on Lake Ontario;

And whereas, the truck traffic, noise pollution, diesel emissions, ground vibrations, and limestone dust of the current St. Marys operations in Bowmanville can be expected to double if the mine proceeds;

And whereas, there are other accessible and adequate sources of limestone for aggregate in the Greater Golden Horseshoe area;
