• Walmart signed a leasing agreement with the Mission College Board of Trustees to occupy the Mercado Shopping Center.

• A Walmart will have an immediate and dramatic impact on our roads and congestion levels around Mission College and along 101.

• Walmart is not the type of business we are trying to attract to Santa Clara. Walmarts result in increased crime for neighborhoods, a strain on local police departments and resources, and ultimately will impact neighboring property values and quality of life.

• Walmarts hurt local small businesses that we cherish and support throughout Santa Clara.

As a citizen of Santa Clara, I appeal to the Santa Clara City Council and Planning Commission to preserve the character and quality of life of our community by protecting our local businesses and neighborhoods from threats of national big box chains.

A Walmart Neighborhood Market in the Mercado Shopping Center will cause increased traffic, will strain local businesses to the point of job loss or store closure, and will destroy the character that brought many of us to Santa Clara in the first place.

Please take a stand for your constituents and allow them a voice in this matter. The greater good of residents should not be impacted at the hands of the Mission College Board of Trustees, who is only concerned with financial gain.

We call on you to hold a public hearing as Walmart moves forward with their plans.
