There has been a contamination of lead throughout our water pipes at SUNY Purchase College. However, Purchase College refuses to seek a new water system and assumes that a water filter is going to solve our problems. It does not matter if the lead contamination is only in our bathroom sink or in our kitchen sink. Having lead in our water is UNACCEPTABLE. We pay way too much money for lead infused water. WE NEED A NEW WATER SYSTEM. And water filters are not good enough. NEW PIPES NEED TO BE INSTALLED IMMEDIATELY. Also, it's been over 24 hours and facilities still have not arrived at most of the campus apartments to install the water filter. WE ALSO NEED MORE FREQUENT WATER TESTING! We have not had water testing within the past 5-6 years. Having water testing every few years is UNACCEPTABLE AND DANGEROUS. Especially, since we did not get the results until months later. Overall, SUNY Purchase College has allowed us to drink lead contaminated water for years without notifying us of this hazardous situation. THIS NEEDS TO STOP. They need to listen to us and stop ignoring us.
We, the undersigned, call Thomas Schwarz and his office to:
-have more frequent water testing (at least once a semester)
-get immediate water test results
-cut ties with Westchester Joint Water Works
-partner with a new water supplier that has newer pipes that do not corrode as easily
-install new water pipes immediately
-receive a stipend for all the years of lead contamination
