Thank you to everyone who signed this petition and spoke out against the shelter being located at the Community Church! Apparently, we were heard. I just received word that the shelter will be at Vets Hall this year!!!
Homelessness in the Lower Russian River Area is a significant issue and definitely needs to be addressed. However, placing a shelter adjacent to our elementary school is not a solution. This would simply create a more issues.
It is proven that a great number of homeless people are on probation or parole and have been released from prison or jail. Obviously, these are not the type of individuals our children should be exposed to near their school. Despite the fact the shelter will not be open during school hours, our children's safety may still be in jeopardy as they may be in close proximity to these individuals before and after school.
Our community should be protecting our innocent children over adults who have generally made bad decisions in their lives and could potentially be a threat to children. A better location for the homeless shelter would be one such as the Veterans Building in Guerneville, which is more centrally located to services.
We, the undersigned, request that the Community Church in Guerneville be removed from the potential site list for the emergency winter homeless shelter.
This request is based on the fact that our children's safety may be at risk due to the close proximity of the Community Church to the Elementary School.
