I hope you are having a successful summer in Muskoka! My name is Terry Ledger and I am your Town Councillor for Ward C in Port Carling. Currently, there is a pending application for the implementation of fibre optic internet in Muskoka; I am writing to you to ask for your support in this endeavor. This technological advancement will provide innumerable benefits to your business and is eligible for funding through the Federal and Provincial Government.

Fibre optic internet transmits telephone signals, internet communication, and cable television signals through light wavelengths. In the installation process, existing power lines are embedded with tiny glass tubes which carry the wavelengths for hundreds of miles. Using these channels, internet service becomes 50 times faster than standard data transfer speeds—with the average being 20 megabits per second. Essentially all online interactions and exchanges happen in real time.

How does this benefit small businesses? Fibre optic internet allows business owners to receive reliable and high speed online benefits. In our current economic climate, fast internet and access to online forums is not a preference, but a customer expectation. Fibre optic internet makes connecting to web browsing, e- commerce or large file transfers a convenience for you and your customers. Muskoka’s ability to generate greater employment opportunities and high quality jobs, hinge on our access to the best internet.

As a small business owner myself, I easily lend my support to this project. I recognize that technological advancements, such as fibre optics, can provide lucrative benefits and maximize a business’s success. The Federal and Provincial Government are in agreement. Through a joint grant, they have made 5.6 million dollars available to install 215 kilometers of new fibre optic infrastructure. In our application for this grant, we would like to have the support of local business owners behind us.
