During US national holidays, millions of people try to leave work early to congest highways, railways, bus lines, and airways traveling to visit family and friends.
Every time a holiday is on a day other than Monday or Friday, people who have relatives a considerable distance away may be unable to travel the distance needed; and for those who have to work the day preceding or following vacation, time is too short for them to enjoy themselves.
They may be very inconveniently forced to travel twice--again by road, rail or plane or a combination thereof--working their way very slowly through the same traffic.
We, the undersigned, call on the US Congress to require all national holidays that naturally fall on a weekday other than Monday or Friday to occur on one of those days.
