The Spring Garden, Francisville and Fairmount neighborhoods of Philadelphia continue to plague by violent and property crimes and the violent death of one of residents has devastated our community. Violent crimes. While violent crimes have dropped 27 % year over year since the same period last year January 1st to September 19th) there have still been 66 violent crimes and 629 property crimes (up 7% since last year) in the Fairmount/Spring Garden neighborhoods since January 1st, 2017. As residents, we often feel like hostages in our own homes for fear of being attacked.
After meetings with police, we have learned that there are two major contributing factors to these high rates:

1. There simply is not enough manpower available to have regular patrols (bike, foot, car) within the Spring Garden, Fairmount and Francisville neighborhoods.

2. Even when assailants are caught, they are often given very light sentences (often with consequences equal to a traffic ticket) due to the district attorney’s office unwilling to push for stronger consequences that would help deter future crime.

While we the undersigned understand that there are things that we can do individually and as a community to help reduce crime, we are asking that the 9th Police District be given additional funding resources and that the Spring Garden, Fairmount and Francisville neighborhoods receive a proportionate increase in police resources to help fight crime. We also ask that the district attorney’s office stop pursing lighter sentences for criminals that engage in both violent and property crimes.
