We are writing this letter as a community out of concern regarding the safety and quality of life in our neighborhood. The homes in close proximity to Mercy First have been subject to break-ins and having your students wondering through our private yards.
Also the Village Elementary School (down the block from Mercy First) has been secured, that is, all doors and windows are locked and recess is indoors, as a result of students leaving your campus.
We are aware there are young people at Mercy First are from ACS, Rikers Island and also undocumented aliens. This has become an unacceptable threat to our quality of life. We respect your intention to help these young people and improve their lives, but we also want to be assured of our privacy and safety.
We would like much tighter security at Mercy First to protect our community.
We would like Mercy First to implement a plan that if a child does not want to be helped and want to leave the facility that you find a place for them within a day or two.
We would like communications of when Mercy First has a runaway incident.
Please do not accept children who have criminal pasts into Mercy First because it is a non-secure facility.
