In New York City, in 2016, there are 60,410 homeless people either living on the streets or taking their chances in shelters. There has been a 37% increase since 2009.
The NYPD, Governor Cuomo and Mayor Bill de Blasio, are starting to tackle the homeless issues in New York City, but it's not enough.
700 people died from hypothermia because they would rather brave the cold than risk the crime in the shelters. The Shelters need to be updated, so there is a safe place for the homeless to sleep.
It is up to us, the people of New York, to make the shelters a safe place for those who don't have a home.
A percentage of our tax money should be going to the shelters so there can be more security and better health codes, and we would get compensated in our tax returns.
Hundreds of people die each year on the streets because they fear the shelters.
Starting now, everyone should be able to get a meal and place to sleep without having to worry about theft and crime.
Help me update the shelters in New York City to get the homeless off the streets.
