Australia's treatment of refugees is shameful. Change begins on a local scale - if you live in the City of Charles Sturt Council, sign this petition to make our council a Refugee Welcome Zone. This will mean more support for programs to welcome needy new arrivals and promote social cohesion.

Eleven other councils in SA are already on board, and last time our council put this to a vote, it was voted down 8-7.

We know migrants contribute so much to our area - let's show our council we want to be known as a Refugee Friendly area - even if our national leaders are doing their best to say the opposite to the world.

We, the undersigned residents of the City of Charles Sturt Council, demand that our local representatives immediately apply to become a Refugee Welcome Zone, as per the program designed and maintained by the Refugee Council of Australia.

As a community thriving through the positive contributions of migrants, we wish to set an example to the rest of our State by demonstrating genuine compassion, creativity and inclusiveness towards new arrivals.

Refugees are maltreated and demonised on a systematic national scale, and we believe Australia must do better. Change begins locally.

In 2015, our local council voted this down 8-7, for being 'too political'.

As active and concerned community members, we are embarrassed to be trailing in the wake of 11 other local councils who are already established as Refugee Welcome Zones, and demand that this discrepancy be rectified.
