Since the start of Satellite providers providing Network Affiliates, they have always encrypted them and more recently put them on spot beams. This has forced viewers to watch their local stations.
This means that If one wanted to watch local news for a different area, they simply could not. Occasionally a station puts their newscasts online, however this is a seldom used practice.
In other Countries like the UK, France, Germany they all allow you to watch stations outside your area. Most people tend to stick to their home station, however if there is a significant event, or if they wanted to simply find out news in another area, they could.
Another reason why they should be Free To Air is that it will increase competition between stations and will provide viewers with a better service. We call on the FCC to demand that the Major networks are Made Free To Air and taken off the Spot Beams.
