It has been brought to the community’s attention, that there has been an application submitted for an oyster farm to be built adjacent to Meadow Island. This brings concern to our community as Meadow Island has been a place for family recreation for generations.
Meadow Island is a special place to many. It’s a place where families come by boat with their kids to picnic, swim, and engage in all kinds of activities on and around the island. It’s a place where happy memories have been made. On almost any given summer day, there is a fleet of boats anchored, beach blankets spread on the sand, kids exploring for crabs, dogs jumping in the water, kayakers circling the island and adults laughing with their friends and families… enjoying what all New Englanders look forward to during those long winter months. Meadow Island is a unique recreational resource that is available to all, providing a safe, healthy and fun place for families that is free! It is important that this wonderful resource be preserved for future generations to enjoy as we all have.
We all stand very much in favor of the small independent business and believe that aquaculture is an important part of future coastal enterprise. We simply would like a more suitable location for the proposed farm that would not interfere with the recreational uses of Meadow Island and its surrounding waters.
As members of this community, we would like to maintain the landscape of Meadow Island and its surrounding area. In particular:
1. We would like to keep the channel between Meadow and Planting Islands clear for small sailing and outboard boats, kayaks, and paddle boards to travel freely and safely through.
2. We would like to keep the area free and clear so people continue to have the opportunity to travel by foot between the two islands.
3. We would like to keep the area clear for recreational fishing as the entire area is a great spot for drifting for bluefish and bass.
4. We want to maintain a safe and healthy environment for families and pets on Meadow Island.
5. We would like to maintain Meadow Island’s natural habitat that has been enjoyed and maintained for generations.
