You are able to help and heal young abuse victims in Northeast El Paso! You can be their voice! Help us petition to get Parkland High School students a dedicated elective class period where you can receive training in types of abuse, leadership, coping mechanisms, and counseling! This class will then be used to help at risk or potential troubled children at our local feeder elementary schools (Parkland, Dolphin Terrace, and Desertairre Elementaries.) We propose each high school student be paired up with one elementary student, referred by their teacher. High school students will be a listening ear for them and hopefully a role model. This program will be successful mainly due to the fact that younger students feel more comfortable communicating with peers, they feel safe, and more willing to open up. This program will help these possible abuse victims by letting them know they aren't alone, by mentoring them and reminding them they aren't at fault and there are people who care! If we are able to help heal our youth early, we may be able to break the vicious cycle of abuse! Please, help us heal our future!!
We, the study body of Parkland High School, El Paso, TX, call on our Administration to help our youth and heal our future! We are graciously petitioning for a new elective class to be offered at PHS. More specifically, a class to train select students to become mentors to our youth....youth who are in need and have been referred to us by their teachers. We propose each high school student, or PAL (Peer Assistance and Leadership), be assigned one student in need from each of our 3 feeder elementary schools. Studies show that children of abuse or neglect identify more with their peers than authority figures, these children will trust peers more and open up more willingly. Our hope and goal is this: If we can help heal just one student then maybe we can break the vicious cycle of abuse!
