Kia Ora, Ko Karla Te Tau ahau.
My Iwi I originate from is Rangi tane, Ngatikahunganu on my father's and Nga Puhi on my mother's but a I am born under the maunga of Te Ao Where Tapu (Mt Aurthur) where I call home and feel protective .
We have resided in 14 Totara St for the past 9 years and paid over tens of thousands in rent. 8 years of winters with no insulation till last year I had ceiling and underfloor put in.
It is our wish to purchase and kaitiaki the homestead and the whenua it sits on.
My parents met in this house and I was conceived here many years ago, our 5 year old daughter died on these lands and another daughter born here.
Living here has meant much more than just a place to live.
Brought up in the community..this homestead provided a hub for its people.
A fire brigade, girl scouts, boys scouts and brigade, kapa haka, society meetings and the various celebrations it's hosted over the years.
My background is community and unity based at different stages, was president for Play Centre, Netball, Rugby, Basketball coach, Child Educator, Chainsaw tutor and now currently working full time in forestry while mentoring youths when I can.
I believe there is tapu areas on the whenua that wish to be acknowledged and kept sacred.
In the past we have asked if the house was for sale, only to find out a couple weeks ago which gave very little time to prepare.
Our wish is to purchase the whenua and whare subject to finance with a settlement date of 3 months. I have been here for 9 years and care deeply about the whenua and its people.
Many in our community want to remain guardians and ensure the land is put to good use to benefit those who love this place. If we could purchase the land there would be opportuntity for us to have community gardens and orchards. Our local river group could lease land to grow the native nursery to retore our local river. We could hold healing camping weekends, where our locals can provide food and utilize their arts, crafts and healing professions. We could have safe recreational horse riding spots for children who want to learn equestrian. We could set up a local green waste so it stops getting dumped at our river. We could have a local drop off Wood Donation Centre so our elders in the community are taken care of in the winter. We could raise meat and grow vegetables for local hangi that service celebrations and tangi.
Please give us the opportunity to make this happen and help ensure spiritual , emotional and physical care for our home lands.
Yours sincerely Karla Te Tau
