This petition is for the men and women who belong to the Laborers International Unions of America. Our only current retirement is a pension plan that's paid on our behalf by our employers. What I am seeking in an alternative option or even something on the side. Like an inuity or 401k. With many states in the union going "right to work" the writing is on the wall that it's only a matter of time before we who work in Chicago go right to work as well. If and when that happens by the time of our retirement we have the possibility of having no money in our pension and unable to retire. If companies aren't required to pay our union benifits then the money will run out. As union brothers and sisters I feel it is imperative that we stick together and seek additional retirement options. At one point we had what was called a pension protection act in place. What that was, was an insurance backed protection of a certain percentage of our pension that wouldn't be touched. As of 2016 that was done away with and we no longer have that protection. It's crucial that we have some protection and stand up for ourselves and our families future retirement.
We, the men and women of the International Laborer's of America ask that a plan be drawn out where we have a retirement option that differs from our current and only pension plan. Whether it means we don't see the money on our check or however it needs to be, we want options. At one point in time the Laborers Union had an inuity program. Now all we have is a pension that's not guaranteed. We are asking our Union officials and representatives to sit down and come up with an option for us workers in these very uncertain times.
