Koalas need our help.
Their populations in NSW have been devastated in recent years by a combination of drought and bushfires.
They were already listed as a protected species because of their vulnerability to extinction, but legislation being brought before the NSW parliament will have the effect of reducing their protections through changes to land clearing laws.
The Environmental Defenders Office says that koala populations are headed for extinction by 2050, or possibly sooner.
Koalas used to be endemic to the Wagga area, but a combination of disease and habitat destruction saw them die out here around the turn of last century.
A koala sanctuary would help preserve the koala population by diversifying their locations. We know this can be done locally, because there is already a successful koala re-population project established at Narrandera, which draws tourists and thereby supports the local economy.

We, the undersigned, call on the NSW government to:
1. fund a koala sanctuary in the Wagga Wagga local government area; and
2. work with Wagga Wagga City Council to identify a suitable site to purchase / re-purpose that is adjacent to a permanent waterway to give koalas the greatest possible chance of surviving any future drought / bushfire event.
