Wensum Sports Centre is owned by Norfolk County Council, who closed it in 2010.
Local people have campaigned to re-open it and have achieved a 5 year lease, allowing them to refurbish and re-open the facilities for the community.
The County Council wants the site allocated for housing, which would increase its monetary value and make a sale to a private developer more likely. This could also threaten the viability of the Adult Education Centre next to it, and undermine the fragile economy of the area.
This petition is to ask City Council to stick to its position and keep the Sports Hall site out of housing allocation, and open for community use.
We the undersigned value the amenity and facilities provided at Wensum Sports Hall, both intrinsically as a sports centre, and for the contribution that the sports centre makes to the vibrancy of the King Street area.
We therefore ask Norwich City Council to refuse the County Council's request for the site's allocation for housing, which would have a negative effect on the local and wider community.
