The Department of Public Safety announced that the school resource officer program will be suspended as of July 1 in an effort to save $1.2 million. The 19 troopers across the state who are school resource officers will be reassigned to patrol responsibilities, according to state police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance. The projected savings will primarily come from a decrease in overtime expenses for patrol units, he said.

The resource officers play an important role in the day to day lives of the students. They should not be cut.

As concerned citizens we do not want the school resource officer positions eliminated. The students deserve to have the officers in school, relationships are built and guidance from the officers occur daily.

Additionally, with the increase in drugs and illegal activity in schools, this is the wrong time to make the cuts.
