Keep Needham Children safe from EMF Radiation

Eversource is seeking the town’s permission to begin a year and a half project that will cripple traffic around the center of our town, our schools, our rail stations and run a 115kV wire under our town’s busiest and most walked streets, potentially risking the health of countless children.

It is up to us to demand that the Town ‘s Board of Selectmen reject Eversource’s “preferred” route and approve the “alternate” route for the West Roxbury to Needham Reliability Project.

If the Town of Needham and Eversource move forward with the current ‘preferred’ route:

• Eversource will install underground high-voltage power lines on the road to Broad Meadow Elementary School and directly in front of Pollard Middle School. These lines will emit a constant and powerful electromagnetic field (EMF) where our children wait for busses, talk with friends, learn and play. There is a real concern about the potential link between long-term exposure to EMF non-ionizing Radiation and childhood leukemia. WHY TAKE THE RISK, REGARDLESS OR HOW LARGE OR SMALL, WITH OUR CHILDREN’S HEALTH?

• Eversource’s “preferred” route also snakes through some of Needham’s most walked and densely populated neighborhoods. From the parents who stroll with their newborns and toddlers, to the children who play, ride and walk there, to adults out for a run - everyone will be directly exposed to that constant EMF non-ionizing radiation.

• Construction will significantly impact the town’s rail commuters as it will cause major disruptions to travel and parking for both Hersey and Needham Junction Stations.

• 18+ months of construction will greatly disrupt bus schedules, travel to Pollard Middle School and Broad Meadow Elementary School and traffic throughout the town.

Eversource does have another option!

The “alternate” route being considering alleviates many of the above concerns. This “alternate” route travels through significantly less densely populated neighborhoods on the outskirts of town, with the majority of the route running down roads that are simply unsafe to walk or play on. Also significant is the fact that this route does not pass any public schools or commuter stations.
