Sainsbury wants to put a food store on the corner of Bysingwood Road and Oare Road.

•Faversham doesn’t need another supermarket. We already have two supermarkets and Tesco is about to expand by 50%.

•An out-of-town store will have a devastating effect on Faversham’s independent town centre shops and the market which in recent years has thrived.

•It will increase traffic through town, along Bysingwood Road and on the A2 at Ospringe. Although Sainsbury say they will run a shuttle bus to the store, most people doing their weekly shop will drive.

•Jobs will be lost not gained: Sainsbury say that a new store will create local jobs but elsewhere the evidence is that the effect of supermarkets on independent stores and their suppliers means that more jobs will be lost than gained.

We the undersigned believe that plans for a Sainsbury supermarket on Bysingwood Road would:

•adversely affect local businesses and their suppliers,

•detract from Faversham’s historic character,

•and traffic generated through town and on the A2 corridor would make Faversham a less healthy place to be.
