KEEP CATS AT LAGRAVE FIELD
According to local press reports in late 2014, the owner of LaGrave Field (who acquired It in foreclosure) had expected local officials (City of Fort Worth or Tarrant Regional ater District) to negotiate with him for purchase of the ballpark. The “new” LaGrave Field was built on the historic site of the original ballpark, which burned down a generation ago. The Fort Worth Cats, our iconic local club, have struggled bravely in recent years with League affiliation and financial difficulties, playing one season at a time.
The owner of the ball park has been unwilling to extend a lease for the upcoming season to the Cats, since he does not intend to be a long-term owner of the property. I believe that many baseball fans in Tarrant County, and especially in Fort Worth, love having a hometown team and an alternative to pricey big league games. My family has enjoyed going to Cats games over the past decade and we believe that the ball park and team are real community assets and significantly enhance the quality of living here.
PETITION TO MAYOR BETSY PRICE & THE FORT WORTH CITY COUNCIL
The undersigned respectfully ask for your serious consideration of the purchase of
or long-term lease of LaGrave Field at the earliest practical date this year. We also
request that the City of Fort Worth in turn extend a multi-year lease to the Cats club, thus preserving valuable local culture and history. Apparently others have a vision that does not include baseball being played at the Northside ballpark.
Presumably this is because they sense a better use of the land would be for residential/retail development. Surely our city leadership will understand the difference between the price of a local treasure and its tremendous value.
