An employee at a Lowell homeless shelter has died after being stabbed by one of the shelter’s resident’s early Saturday morning. According to authorities, at approximately 10:03 a.m., Lowell Police received reports of a stabbing at the Middlesex Street shelter.

Upon arrival, officers observed the injured Roldan and saw Clergeau still armed with a knife. Jose Roldan, 34, of Lowell was rushed to the hospital where he died. The defendant is alleged to have attacked and killed one of the very people whose job it was to help him by serving his needs in a homeless shelter, at this time when so many are in dire need of shelter and life's basics.

Roldan's death comes less than two weeks after Deshawn James Chappell, a 27-year-old resident at the North Suffolk Mental Health Association in Revere, allegedly murdered 25-year-old Stephanie Moulton, a counselor at the group home. Moulton's family has called for laws that would require security at group homes and other facilities. Chappell has been described as schizophrenic, and a judge ordered him to undergo a mental-health evaluation.

We the undersigned, call on the cities officials to make it safer. This is something that could have been prevented. You have no safety for the shelter workers on duty.

We need to make it safer -- not only for the people who live there but for the people who work there. To install a metal detector, hire a security guard or pat down shelter users for weapons at all times -- not just at night.
