Dear Committee Members,

I am writing to you regarding a subject and symbol that is very fitting to become a United States semi-postal stamp. I am the artist who has designed and created the 9/11 heart Symbol back in September of 2001. (I have enclosed a photo)

During such a time of disbelief and sadness, I sat in my studio trying to wrap my head around what had just occurred. I knew people who were killed, sent into action or volunteered their rescue efforts at Ground Zero. I wanted to bring to life a symbol to show my support, love and remembrance for so many that had perished. The result was the 9/11 Heart Symbol. I made a few stickers for my family and myself and it brought me a surprising sense of peace.

Suddenly I had people outside my shop wanting to buy this symbol that I simply intended to show my personal support. I decided to make more and with contributions, I donated to The Red Cross and World Trade Center Families Group. Shortly after the attacks, I volunteered my personal time at Staten Island Fresh Kills. It then became even more personal to me to have this symbol embraced by all.

Since then, The Symbol has been registered with The Library of Congress, printed in various newspapers, highlighted in former Pres. Bush’s campaign, on The Yes Network’s 10th Anniversary special, etc. I designed a 9/11 memorial that was erected in Paterson, NJ and dedicated to 1st Responders and resident Kenneth Lira who worked in the WTC. Each time I hear family members speak at a memorial service, they speak the same words, ‘You’re always in our hearts” and ‘You’ll never be forgotten” it gives me confirmation that The Symbol is so fitting.

I realize even though many people have embraced this symbol, there are many who are not aware it exists. I believe it is a beautiful symbol that should be seen and acknowledged so that numerous people are Never Forgotten. While the POW/MIA symbol brings a sense of comfort to those who show their respect and fly it’s flag, The 9/11 Heart Symbol is for the 9/11 victims and those affected by that tragic day. We carry these people in our hearts.

On June 7, 2002, the Heroes of 2001 semi-postal stamp became available and was offered for sale through December 31, 2004. Through the sales of 133 million stamps sold, the result was a contribution of $10.6 million dollars. Sales from a 9/11 Heart Symbol semi-postal stamp can aid in the continuance of fundraising and provide assistance to so many still in need.

It is my vision to see this simplistic but poignant symbol made into a beautiful stamp and one day flying on flags right below our country’s flag. The 12th anniversary has just passed, but each additional anniversary year that arrives, people continue to want to do something good, helpful and selfless for the good of others. I am hereby asking the Committee to please give consideration in making The 9/11 Heart Symbol into a postage stamp. Since the artwork rendered, it merely needs your stamp of approval.

Sincerely,

Louie D. Ponstingel

Dear Committee Members:

I support the request to recognize The 9/11 Heart Symbol by issuing a US semi-postal stamp. This poignant symbol was created by artist Louie D. Ponstingel in September 2001 and designed to be a symbol of remembrance and love. By signing this petition today, I support the artist and the following mission:

* Raise awareness and continued support by providing ongoing fundraising and assistance to the victims of 9/11/01 through the use of The Symbol.

* NEVER FORGETTING "The People of 9/11" by honoring them with a 9/11 Heart Symbol semi-postal stamp.

Please honor the countless victims; civilians, 1st responders, military and surviving victims by creating this symbol of national awareness. The time is now for this very fitting and deserving symbol to become a United States semi-postal stamp as there are many people requiring the assistance it can provide.

The Heroes of 2001 semi-postal stamp raised a contribution of $10.6 million dollars during the two years in was available. Sales from a 9/11 Heart Symbol semi-postal stamp can aid in the continuance of fundraising and provide assistance to so many individuals.

We, the people, continue to want to do something good, helpful and selfless for people who still need our help. Each additional year that passes, it is equally momentous to remember the people that this symbol represents so that they are Never Forgotten. The 9/11 Heart Symbol is for the 9/11 victims as well as all Americans since we will forever carry them in our hearts.

By signing this petition, I am hereby asking the Committee to please give consideration in making The 9/11 Heart Symbol into a postage stamp.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned
