Every household in Ireland will receive an Irish Water application pack from September 2014. Households in Ireland are asked to complete the application by the closing date of 31 October 2014.

Domestic water charges will apply from 1 October 2014 for both metered and unmetered homes, with the first bills being issued from January 2015. Every household is asked to confirm how many people live in the property, however it discriminates against separated parents by further stating that only children who have their primary home at this address are counted.

Parents who share custody and access will not receive equal treatment because due to our complex family law system, many father's are not considered the primary carer even when custody and access is equally shared.

Please take 15 seconds to put your name and email address to this petition to demand equal rights for all parents who are raising their children.

We the undersigned, call on our Government to express our objection to this government’s introduction of a charge for water based on the discrimination against stepfamilies by not giving equal entitlement of the children's free allowance to all parents.

We already fund and pay for our state services through our taxation system which many stepfamilies suffer under because unlike other groups, they are not receiving any state support.

Many Stepfamilies can’t afford one more expensive addition to our annual cost of living and water is absolutely essential for each and every human being on the planet regardless of their family set up. Stepfamilies in Ireland deserve to be treated fair and equal.

We're asking the state to respect each and every family by giving them equal rights. Stepfamilies are not a 21st century phenomenon. We're asking you, our Government, to redefine the conditions for parents to claim the free allowance for their children.

This would undoubtedly take some of the pressure off parents who are separated from the other parent, yet share custody and access and subsequently have the same maintenance costs or more and who are struggling to keep up with their simple day to day living costs.

It’s long past time that our government began to act in the interests of all the state’s inhabitants instead of following an outdated family model.
