There is currently no law to protect private tennents in Guernsey. Period. Over many years tennents have been subjected to appalling living conditions, loss of deposit for no justifibale reason and unjust / unfair clauses in tennency agreements. In my own case I was forced to pay a bill relating to cleaning, a light bulb replacement and gardening, which were all carried out by the Landlord without my permission during the term of my Lease, when they enetered my property to carry out the work whilst I was away (I should note I had employed my own cleaner and both the garden and property were kept spotless). They threatend me and despite the obvious breach of Lease on their part by entering the property and carrying out works (at a cost to me) prior to the end of the Lease without any notice or my permission, they continued to threaten me with footing the bill in relation to them getting legal advice and pursuing me through petty debts after I had my own advisors highlight their short comings. I couldn't afford to pay £1000's of legal fees to prove they were wrong and I feel let down by the Guernsey system. I have been forced under duress to pay their bill and they continue to get away with digusting behaviour by bullying tennents into submission. We are in the 21st Cebtury and Tennents deserve fair rights and a voice and this needs to stop.

We, the undersigned, call on the States of Guernsey to undertake a comprehensive review of the protection of private tennents in Guernsey and implement reform to give tennents and Landlord's equal rights, to introduce an ombudsman for settling disputes between Landlords and Tennents. We further call upon the States of Guernsey to introduce a comprehensive protection scheme for tennant deposits in Guernsey.
