Being one who struggles with mental illness myself, I've found myself admitted to a psychiatric hospital a couple of times. Luckily for me, I ended up in two hospitals full of doctors and nurses who actually cared, and made my experience the best they could. However, if Google reviews are anything to go off of, I think it's safe to say that not everyone is so lucky. When I was in Mesa Springs (an amazing mental hospital in Fort Worth, Texas), I had the chance to talk with several other teen patients there, and one of them told me that they had been in a mental hospital called Millwood in Arlington, Texas, and that it was terrible. Out of curiosity, I Googled the place a year or so later to look at the reviews, and it turns out many people agree that it is a terrible mental hospital. I saw people saying things like "I have never been made to feel so belittled in my life. If you don't have depression when you get to Millwood you will sure have it by the time you leave," as well as "One word. Torture." Oh, and don't forget, someone also said: "It's been six months since I was patient there, and to this day I now suffer from PTSD. I've been given doctors to treat my nightmares about the place." People are calling it a prison, a hell, and other things that one should not be able to say about a psychiatric hospital that has not yet been shut down by the government. Seeking further information, I did some Googling and eventually found a BuzzFeed article about the hospital, which told me it was part of one of the USA's largest psychiatric chains, United Health Services. I wanted to see if more of their hospitals were this bad, so I looked up Austin Lakes Hospital and Salt Lake Behavioral Health. And, sure enough, more of the same stuff, like this: "I came to Austin Lakes a little over a year ago after a suicide attempt and it was even more traumatizing and horrible than the attempt itself." What kind of mental hospital GIVES you PTSD, or is more traumatic than ATTEMPTING SUICIDE? I'll tell you what kind. A UHS hospital. This is why I want to do something. UHS is out to take advantage of the mentally ill who have insurance, and nothing more. If you want to see the BuzzFeed article I read, I'll put a link here. If you wanna see the reviews, Google the names of the hospitals.
