Dear Ambassador,
We wish to appeal to you on behalf of all human rights activists currently detained and sentenced in Chinese prisons, which are the subject of our deepest concern.
We are very concerned about the detention of human rights lawyer Yu Wensheng (sentenced to four years in prison), journalist Zhang Zhan (sentenced to four years in prison), Chen Qiushi (who disappeared for eight months and reappeared in September under very close surveillance of the authorities), Fang Bin (taken away by the police and of which they have no more news) and many other prisoners of conscience. We report the detention and persecution of activists Li Yuhan, Huang Qi, Ge Jueping, Qin Yongmin, Gao Zhisheng, Ilham Tohti, Tashi Wangchuk, Wu Gan, Liu Feiyue, Li Zehua, Li Qiaochu, Rinchen Tsultrim, Xie Yang, Xu Zhiyong, Ding Jiaxi, Xu Qin, Yang Maodong, Chang Weiping, Yang Hengjun, Cheng Yuang, Liu Yongze, Wu Gejianxiong, Wang Jianbing and Sophia Huang Xueqin.
Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights reminds us that "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."
The People's Republic of China must listen to the voice of its people. Freedom of thought is a right.
We ask on you for strong diplomatic pressure to stop the arrests and the immediate release of all human rights activists currently in prison.
Thanking you in advance for your time on this important and urgent matter.
Thank you for your attention.
Yours sincerely.
