Public Schools should not be required to comply with a standard mode of dress.

We, the undersigned, call on the Guilford County School Board to repeal the Standard Mode of Dress (SMOD) at High Point Central High School for the 2007-2008 school year.

Students should be allowed to wear what they choose instead of conforming to uniforms. It is the right granted by the United States Constitution that grants us the right to choose, and as students we have the right to choose no SMOD. For the upcoming school year High Point Central will have a strict SMOD for every student.

In 2001 North Carolina passed legislation requiring local school boards to establish a "reasonable dress code for students." This SMOD is clearly not reasonable due to its strict guidelines. High Point Central High School is a good school that does not need an extreme measure of so-called “positive enforcement” that will have no positive effect on students.

Please support a no SMOD dress code in our already positive, diverse school.
