As-salamu alaykum Al-Furqan Jame Masjid:

We, the undersigned New Yorkers, Muslims, and Jews, stand with you in mourning and love after the murders of Imam Maulama Akonjee and his assistant Tharam Uddin. Innalilahi wa inna ilayhi rajioon.

This crime is especially shocking and horrific to have happened in our own diverse and beautiful city, to men leading the holy work of worship and community building.

The murders are still being investigated and the motive remains unclear. However, we condemn bigotry and violence against anyone based on religion, appearance, race, ethnicity, or identity. We reject hateful rhetoric that has become sadly normalized as a violation of core American, Jewish and Muslim values. We come together to call upon all individuals and communities to speak out against hate and violence.

As the Qu’ran says - whoever kills a soul, it is as if he had slain mankind entirely. And whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved mankind entirely.

The NYC Muslim-Jewish Solidarity Committee offers our friendship and support in this difficult time. Inshallah, we will continue to respond to violence with love and compassion.
