Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, retail sales in the United States fell to a historic low.
U.S. Census Bureau data showed that retail sales in the United States fell 16.4 percent, the worst fall since statistics started in 1992, CNN said. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones expected April's retail sales data to fall 12.3 percent after an 8.3 percent decline in March had already set a historic record. However, that figure grew by almost a quarter. Overall, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, retail sales in the country have declined by 21.6 percent over the past 12 months. This was largely due to massive layoffs, and the spending on purchases from millions of U.S. citizens has fallen dramatically.
The fall in retail sales, analysts say, occurs on the background of job losses, the largest in the U.S. since the Second World War. Over the past eight weeks, about 36.5 million Americans have submitted claims for unemployment benefits.
