Alicia Grimaldo is an army veteran who suffers from mental health issues. Her family called the Plano Police Department for help in October because Alicia was not taking her medication and was acting erratically. However, police officers escalated the situation by forcibly taking down a 5-feet-5 confused and unarmed woman who they were called to provide assistance. Alishia has been jailed on felony charges relating to her scuffle with overly-aggressive police officers who did not have to physically attack her to defuse a tense situation. This is an injustice that Alicia has lost her freedom due to the fact that officers at the Plano Police Department are not properly trained with how to deal with citizens who struggle with mental health issues.
We, the undersigned, call on the Plano City Council to investigate the department practices and guidelines in regards to how the Plano Police Department interacts with citizens who have mental health issues.
