Currently, the NBA gives its annual champion the "Larry O'Brien Trophy," honoring a man who served as the league's commissioner for 9 years, after a successful and varied career in politics. He had a fine run in the NBA, too, and certainly deserves an honor like perhaps having the league's annual "Executive of the Year" award named after him. But living legend Bill Russell, an 11-time champion as a player with the Boston Celtics (two of those while serving as the head coach), and a champion at every level he played (high school/NCAA/Olympics) is a much more fitting choice for the sport's top trophy... Currently, Russell's name is affixed to the NBA Finals MVP trophy-- there's an easy fix there. Michael Jordan gets that one.
We, the undersigned, call on the NBA to award the "Bill Russell Trophy" to its championship team, replacing Larry O'Brien as the honoree. The Finals MVP trophy should be named after Michael Jordan. Let's make trophies that make sense.
