Many facts and some of those numbers have changed and continue to change so i have put the new data in this english version.
India is set to produce a solar park of total cost 2.2.bilions and powering capability of 700MW. Our Solar companies assure that in Cyprus the cost of that action would be even less.. about 1,6 - 1,7 billion. According to experts the rebuild of the Vasilikos power station will exceed 1,5 or 2 billions while has less than 700MW powering capabilities.
In my opinion it doesnt make sense to rebuild a station that is more expensive, less profitable and at times that we already are in a procedure having e.u. forcing us to gradually shut oil stations down.
Why bother rebuilding while it is cheaper to go solar and we anyway have to go solar the next few years due to EU regulations.
I believe that if we proceed with photovoltaics now, as much as possible, as either way there has been started a painful procedure of conversion by individuals, it will be like we erase that major damage and we lower the penalties of the e.u., as also if we proceed rebuilding we ll have the conversion still ahead of us, we will still have the pressure of the e.u. on us and penalties and it will be as we make circles having always the same victim. The cypriot citizen..
I believe it would be disastrous for my country to spent 1,5 - 2 billion euros to rebuild the station at the time that solar technollogy costs less, produces more electricity (at day time) and has more benefits. A great part of our focus should be given to renewables especially solar.
